Goal Setting and Personal Bests

Each swimmer should work with their coaches to set goals for the summer. Each goal is individual and should be established to motivate the swimmer. Goals should focus on the swimmer's actions and performance alone (not what other swimmers do); focus on what is under your control.

Examples of goals (for a week or a season) might be:

  • have a quick start in Free
  • complete a successful Backstroke flip turn
  • have a clean finish in Butterfly
  • get a legal, official time in a new stroke
  • drop .02 time in a stroke
  • successfully swim an IM (no DQ)
  • complete a 50 Breaststroke, with a clean 25-meter turn

“Personal Bests” are when a swimmer swims a particular event faster than he or she has swum it this summer. Time Trials are a good opportunity to set a benchmark for the season’s “personal bests.”

The Ladder

The Ladder refers to the list swimmers fastest to slowest, by stroke and age group. A new ladder is generally available on Tuesday mornings, after times from the most recent Saturday and Monday meets have been updated in the team database. The ladder is used to determine rosters and entries for Saturday NVSL Dual meets.

Only Wahoo parents may look at the ladder. While swimmers may have an idea of where they are on the ladder, please do not share the ladder information with your swimmer – your swimmer can only control their time and should not focus on other swimmers’ times. The ladder is available from the Team Reps at any time.
